Escape position – in chess there is the idea of a flight square, a square to which a king under threat can escape. The vanishing point then becomes that single vital space that holds the game’s time in suspense.
Vanishing point: an element of perspective construction that, through illusion, organizes space and creates a sense of depth.
Vanishing point, is a single-channel video installation whose title evokes both the technical term of spatial representation and the king’s “flight square” on the chessboard.
It is on this double meaning that the tension between life and game takes shape—between risk and possibility, but above all around choices and miscalculations, as narrated by Vladimir Nabokov in The Luzhin Defense, the 1929 novel from which some of the texts punctuating the video are drawn. The space of the video is a natural theatre—a forest, a place of bewilderment and search—where the eye is guided toward an invisible horizon by a boy-king seeking refuge among the trees, becoming a guide for the viewer on a journey between the real and the unreal.
A river runs through the images, flowing like inexorable time. The king embodies the vital impulse of youth; here he is not a symbol of power but of vulnerability.
His escape is not triumphant, but necessary. The fluid, undefined images seek to offer the viewer a parallel dimension, at times heightened by the superimposed graphic trace of neuronal activity in a creative phase, forming a pattern that blends with the surrounding nature. The forest thus becomes a labyrinth, the river a passageway, the king an exposed alter ego. The snake that appears around the king’s neck and in archival footage is a powerfully ambivalent symbol, representing both evil and danger, and wisdom, healing, immortality, and life—the extremes between which the king’s game and escape unfold.
There is no victory, only a search for balance between illusion and concreteness. The video constructs a horizon that is never reached, suspending time.
